Bursitis is inflammation of bursae. Bursae are the fluid filled envelopes that surround joints. The fluid (synovial fluid) lubricates the area where two tissues slide over each other. The picture of the joint here shows where the synovial fluid sits the the Sinovial Cavity which is surrounded by a bursa.
When Bursae get infalmmed they become warm, and as they fill with inflammatory fluid the become stiff an painful.
